Koelhuis District
Turning places into permanent creative incubators
Koelhuis District is a new, to be developed cultural district leveraging new media art and immersive technology to create a lively, creativity-driven neighborhood in Eindhoven, at the heart of Europe. The initiative fills a gap in the European cultural landscape by establishing a permanent place for co-creation, experimentation, and presentation of contemporary cultural production, with a sharp focus on new media art and immersive technologies. The Koelhuis District is also a multifunctional district combining a residential development, makers spaces, artist residency programs, and a cultural venue into an extensive cultural hub connected with its environment. The district, in all its components, has a unique offering of affordable housing, working facilities, competitive technology, and a broad platform for arts, culture, and leisure. It also combats gentrification by providing artists with permanent access to large spaces, affordable housing, and workspaces, while also offering them a platform to experiment, work, and present.
Achieving the optimal balance between modularity, creating a convenient environment, and seeking sustainable solutions created a gratifying challenge in this assignment.
